The Razor’s Edge – How Power, Desire and Achievement Align with Spiritual Advancement

Thu, April 7, 2016 @ 8:00 pm

Join Chris for a virtual class and meditation on Thursday evening, April 7 at 8 PM EST,  5 PM PST for a discussion on How Power, Desire and Achievement Align with Spiritual Advancement:  The Razor’s Edge, AKA: Servant Leadership.

In many religious traditions, there is a presumption that the accumulation of wealth, power, fame, and material success are at odds with the enlightenment process and one’s spiritual development.   In our discussion I will not be attempting to persuade you one way or another.  I will present concepts, techniques and questions that will hopefully provoke your inner and outer beings into the question that rings loudest, in many people, including myself: “Why am I here, and what should I be doing right now to help me progress spiritually?”

When we ask, and listen sincerely to the answer to this question, we must, without resistance or argument, loyally and dutifully follow the will of eternity.  Ok, great. Sounds easy enough.  Give me the beads, and a meditation cushion and we’ll call it a day, right?

Not so fast, oh most nobly born.  What happens when the answer is for you is to “succeed wildly?”  What happens when the will of eternity tells you to go out and succeed wildly at being a lawyer, doctor, politician, entrepreneur, CEO, athlete, writer, actor, or musician?

What if that wild success yields you untold riches and gives you power over hundreds or thousands of people?   What then?  Then you are faced with the path of the razor’s edge.  This is the most fun, exciting, challenging, and riskiest (and therefore the fastest) path to self-knowledge.

For some people the transformation is in the accumulation.  For some it is in the time after the accumulation.  And for some it will be the spiritual and life challenges that life presents you when you are at the top of your game, every single day.

In Spiderman, Uncle Ben says to Peter Parker, “With great power comes great responsibility.”  This is the mantra of the people who are called, and driven to follow the path of the Razor’s Edge.  It is called the Razor’s Edge, because it is only by the width of a razor blade, that we have to balance ourselves between being benevolent or becoming a tyrant; between being selfless and being an egomaniac.

When you live on the edge of that razor you must face all your fears, all your biases, all your presumptions of what is holy and pure.  Perhaps the most difficult part is to look honestly at all your desires, and transform those desires into tools for achieving what some might refer to as “material success.”   But for you, that success will only be the water buckets eternity gave you to carry.

The driving force behind that is the realization that the best way to serve others is to lead with integrity.
